How I Pray
Posted on 27. Dec, 2007 by frank in faith, spiritual growth
I’m sitting next to a fireplace in my TOP SECRET sermon writing location today and I need to rest my brain so I decided to write a quick post.
Do you have moments when you just don’t know what to pray? I do… and when I encounter those times I lean on a standby method that I use quite often. I wish I could remember where I first heard it, It was more than 15 years ago. I call it the “hand method.” Each digit on one hand represents a topic of prayer.
- Thumb – pray for the church, the staff, and our volunteers
- Index finger – pray for your spouse, (if you are not married pray for your intimate relationships)
- Middle finger – pray for your family (parents, brothers, sisters, children, etc)
- Ring finger – pray for your friends and associates
- Pinky finger – pray for yourself
I pray this way because it helps me organize my thoughts and it helps prevent my prayers from being self centered. Hopefully it helps you too!

We used that idea with the older kids for their team time at camp at few years ago. I am glad to hear that it is something you heard that has stuck with you. Just think there may be a handful of kids from camp that using the ‘hand method’ today!

My children learned to pray that way when they were in elementary school. It’s an ageless method, though.BTW – I loved the sermon. It was exactly what I needed to hear. God is so amazing that way! Apparently He really wants me to embrace this. I was looking through some scripture verses I had written in an old journal and this is what jumped out at me:Everything that goes into a life of pleasing God has been miraculously given to us by getting to know, personally and intimately, the One who invited us to God.2 Peter 1:3 (The Message)Guess what my one resolution for the New Year is!
