How I Got Into Reading

When I was a child my parents always encouraged me to read just as they are with my son Michael in the picture on the left. I remember my mom sitting down with us and reading everything from children’s books to C.S. Lewis’ The Chronicles of Narnia. I was fascinated by these incredible places that I was hearing about as my mom read the words off each page.
As I started reading on my own I remember liking nursery rhymes, since they had rhythm and were fun to read. However, my favorite books when I was young were in a series called Choose Your Own Adventure. As the story line progressed you got to choose the decisions that were made in the story! Those decisions often had serious consequences and some would even bring the story to a quick ending. Many of those endings made you want to start over and pick a different path the next time you read the book. As you can see from the chart below many of them had 30 or more endings. I would have to say that these books (along with encouragement from my parents) helped me make reading a regular part of my life and I hope to see the same for my boys.
