Will Gas Prices Change Church Attendance?
Posted on 28. May, 2008 by frank in ministry
Gas around my area is quickly approaching $4.00 per gallon and I can’t help but wonder how it could change church attendance as prices continue to rise. I remember when we first moved to PA in the late 90′s we would drive for an hour to get to a church. We did it because an old family friend had taken over the church and we wanted to support him after moving to the area. If gas prices back then were like they are now I don’t think we could have afforded to drive there each week. We were on very tight budget since I was finishing up my education.
I have already started meeting a few people at our own church that have told me they wanted to find a place to call their church home that was closer to where they lived. So, they decided to pay us a visit at CCV. I wonder how far the average person is willing to travel to get to church and if that changes with the cost of gas? That brings me to a couple of questions for you, just leave your answer in the comment area and I will report on the responses:
- How far do you travel to get to church?
- How long would you be willing to travel if you loved the church?

I will drive a million miles to hear Frank and Brian speak. They are that good.

We only travel about 3 or 4 miles to CCV, because we purposefully looked for a church in our area. The price of gas would not change where we would go, and if we would go to church.

I travel almost 10 mi now. Wouldn’t miss Sun mornings, but gas prices might have an impact on how many of the other activities I attend.

I drive about 25 miles, and I do have to say it is starting to hurt. I agree that it may curtail some of the extras . . .especially when they mean sitting on 422 for hours!! ok, maybe not hours, but still, it’s a long time!Perhaps we could start a carpool list for those of us who live further out . . .

we live an hour away. We were coming every week but now are only coming every other. On the sundays we are not able to come we listen to the sermons online.
