The Idea Camp

The Idea Camp is a collaborative movement of idea-makers who facilitate free hybrid conferences and develop resources for people who desire to move ideas toward implementation. Facilitated by a growing collective of innovative thinkers and practitioners from numerous disciplines, participants gather around topics of interest to encourage and inspire one another, share practical wisdom from the field, and develop intentional networks for idea-making.

THE NINES is a free one-day event that will take place totally on-line. It is designed for all church staff members who want to be motivated and stretched in their leadership. Leadership Network asked some of the church’s greatest communicators: “If you had nine minutes to talk one-on-one with thousands of church leaders, what is the one thing that you would tell them?”

Starting at 9am Central Time they will be having speakers all day long, each speaking for only 9 minutes. So they have to get right to the good stuff because there is no time to waste!

Group Life Conference 2008 – Wrap Up

The conference was a great experience for me this year and I had a good time participating on the panel discussion around social media and community. I really believe the church is going to need to embrace technology on a deeper level or they will miss out on some significant opportunities to connect with this new generation. Social media is a part of their DNA and the church has to embrace it to reach them. I look forward to more discussions on this in the future.

Bill Search – Simple Small Groups

I had a great discussion this morning with Bill Search (author of Simple Small Groups) and Chad Allen (from Baker Books). We talked about a variety of issues around community and group life.

How open should groups be? We landed around empowering leaders to make decisions for our groups. Intimacy can be disrupted in group life and the timing of a new addition can have a big impact on spiritual growth. However, certain groups lend themselves to new additions. For example, Bill shared how his couples group can handle a new family at any moment. Intimacy is there but guys and gals don’t share their deepest darkest secrets as quickly in a environment with the opposite sex.

How can video curriculum be presented in a simple way? I made a suggestion here that they felt was a good idea. Video curriculum is great, especially when it is new and creative like what the LIQUID folks are doing. But Liquid is not something my group can handle back to back for a study and often in group curriculum that is supported with DVD the teaching is WAY TOO LONGGGGGGG…. I suggested giving a group leader DVD support in a 5-7 minute discussion starter/quick teaching moment. Introduce an idea and then get us going with the scripture and let the group leader do his or her thing and get started.

Bill’s new book looks like a great read and I plan on diving into it right away. Here is some info from the back cover:

Will Miller – What Stunts Community Growth?

This guy is funny, really funny. Here is some statements from Will that were great.

- The culture stunts community growth.

- The US leads the world in stress disorders

- 25% of Americans have stress related disorder

- Last year 46million Americans moved

- The average American is watching 28 hours of TV/week and the Internet is enhancing it.

- How many people have refrigerator rights in your house?

- The only definition of a family that holds any water is when you have a feeling that you belong

- Pop-psychology tells us we have disorders and they feed us a prescription

- By being an other engaged person we will find other engaged people who will engage me

- Driving is the laboratory for America’s mood disorders

- I need a second car as a beater – Will calls it a Rage Displacement Mobile

- We know people’s tender points and we can hurt them in a second, instead we need to love

- Love is a noise that cuts through the culture and people need it

- People’s defenses are down when they are in crisis, you have a small window to get in, love them in that moment

- Connection with others is the answer

Worship and Will gave me just what I needed tonight, love and laughter.
